Small Business Q & A - behind the curl creatives

Well, well, here we are back with another blog, but this one is a little different. Today I want to answer some of my most asked questions about my small business & about being a small business owner.

It is so important as a small business owner to let your clients/ audience get to know you both personally & professionally. I think the more personable you can be, the more other people can relate & in the end purchase from you.

Anyway, let's get to the questions:

1) What made you want to start your small business?

I want to say I started my small business was because I wanted to, but honestly, that wasn't the case. behind the curl creatives started because I want to expand my tool belt/ resume. My small business started because I wanted to learn how to draw these cartoon looking portrait drawings; I bought myself an iPad, I asked friends & family to send me photos, sold my first few drawings at a virtual Christmas market and well, the rest is history.

2) How did you get/ think of your business name?

behind the curl, creatives started back when I was in my digital media marketing program, where I started a blog + Instagram account called Koffee with Cass, and well, I wouldn't say I like coffee, so that name quickly changed to behind the curls. I cannot take credit for either behind the curls or behind the curl creatives. I have to give kudos to my boyfriend, Rob. I knew I wanted to continue behind the curl concepts when branding my small business because I want everything I create + sell to be an extension of me. So here we are with my small business name, "behind the curl creatives".

3) What is your favourite part of your small business?

Honestly, there is way too much to choose from, but if I had to pick something, I could say creating is my favourite part. behind the curl creatives is a creative outlet for me. It allows me to express my emotions, my passions and my creativity.

4) What is something you wish people knew about you?

There are too many things, but here is a list of a few things I think people should know or might think are cool.

  • I currently work in sports.
  • I knew how to drive a tractor before I could drive a car.
  • I used to show dairy cattle.
  • I have the cutest Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Her name is Bailee. 

5) Outside of behind the curl creatives, what do you do?

behind the curl creatives (right now) is my side gig, but on a Monday to Friday 9-5 basis, I am the Marketing & Communications Specialist for Ringette Ontario. My passion for sports started back in grade 8, so I thought I would bring my passions for sports, marketing and social media together.

6) Where do you see your business going in the next five years?

I think, like most people, I wish I could see where my business will be in the next five years, but I am hopeful it will still be a small business, and it will be a successful one at that. I hope to keep creating and expanding my product offering.

7) If you were to describe yourself in 3 words, what would the three words be?

  • Creative
  • Determined 
  • Friendly

8) What is a product you have created that you wish people knew more about?

All my products are somehow an extension of me. There are two products I wish more people knew about/ bought. I would love for people to know about my "Custom Location Cards" & my "Comfy Cozy Crewnecks". They both are the perfect gift for the special someone in your life or even yourself.

9) What is a product or collection that you thought might have done better than it has?

I have said it before, I want to create products that are extensions of me, but to be honest, there is a product I started because everyone else was, and it seemed to be something people wanted, AND that was my stickers. Although I love stickers, I do not put them on my laptop or water bottle, but I thought I could create them because it was a trending item. I still want to make them but want to find out what people want.

10) What is a product or collection that has done better than you thought it would?

My small business may not have grown as fast as others, nor have I received as many sales, but I am happy with what has happened so far. A few months ago, I released my tumbler glasses, and they have done so much better than I thought they would. They are the perfect glass to make any table, drink or photo CUTE AF!
